Research Activities

The CLL’s main research project at present utilizes the deliberation simulation “Rebuilding Main Street” (RMS). This simulation is designed to approximate the complicated real-world conditions of deliberation, so that participants may gain experience and skill in engaging their civic peers in collective decision making.

At present, the CLL is using RMS to study the evolution of deliberation skills among undergraduate students.

Moving forward, the CLL’s research activities are oriented toward the following phenomena related to civic life:

  • Polarization in Mississippi communities
  • Determinants of civic engagement
  • The effects of social media use on civic life
  • Demographics and civic habits
  • The rural/urban divide and political discourse
